How to export your Character.AI data

Character.AI has one official export: a single request that covers your whole account. You ask for it in settings, then wait for an email with a download link. Request it early. It can take weeks to arrive, and the link stops working after 7 days.

Steps checked against the Character.AI Help Center article updated October 8, 2026. Page last reviewed November 6, 2026.

Request the export on the website

  1. Open your Profile.
  2. Click Profile Settings.
  3. Click Account.
  4. Click Manage Account & Data.
  5. Click Export Data. A pop-up confirms that a download link will be emailed to you.

Request the export in the mobile app

  1. Open your Profile.
  2. Tap the Settings icon.
  3. Tap Legal & Privacy.
  4. Tap Export Data. A "Success" banner appears once the request is submitted.

What happens after you ask

What the export may not include

The Help Center does not publish a list of what the file contains or what format it uses. Guides that have opened real exports describe a ZIP of JSON files with account details, characters and messages, but that is not documented and has changed over time. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose, such as pinned memories, character definitions and the chats that matter most.

You cannot export a single chat. The official export is one request for the whole account.

Do not delete your account first

Account deletion cannot be undone. If you delete the account before the export arrives, you lose access to the data you were waiting for. Wait until you have downloaded and opened the file.

Move the characters you made

If you want to keep using the characters you created, the free Character.AI transfer tool converts them in your browser and can import them privately into a Pogee account. Conversion runs locally; nothing is uploaded until you confirm an import.

It moves characters you created. It does not move chat history. Reading characters directly from Character.AI needs the CaiTransfer Chrome extension; without it you can still open a backup JSON file.
